Birgit Gudjonsdottir
Cinematographer Award

Birgit Gudjonsdottir

For her consummate understanding of how cinematography illustrates nuances of a story beyond spoken dialogue, Birgit Gudjonsdottir has been selected by TheWIFTS Foundation to receive the 2013 Best Cinematography Award.

Birgit Gudjonsdottir, BVK is an Iceland-Austrian cinematographer who mainly works and lectures in Germany. Since 1992 she has shot feature films, documentaries, advertising commercials and industrial products. Besides second unit work for films like The Bourne Supremacy she has been Director of Photography on films such as Fidgety Philip, Our Grand Despair, Long Shadows and No Name City.
Birgit began her study of cinematography at The Graphical Teaching & Research Institute in Vienna. She then interned on a film with cinematographer Hanus Polak, after which she spent two years working in the Moviecam rental department, which enabled her to broaden her understanding of many different film cameras. Subsequently, Brigit worked as a focus-puller on numerous film projects. At the same time, she began to work as a camera operator on feature films and commercials.

Birgit's initial opportunities to work as Lead Camera Operator came on advertising commercials, documentaries, and the Commissar Rex TV series. She landed her first job as Lead Camera on a feature film with Jargo, a German film shot in 2003 with an Icelandic Director.

Birgit's work ethos is simultaneously defined by the camera equipment and film she is using as well as the conceptual elements of the story. It is the visual language of the story that fascinates her - even the back ground in any shot can advance the storyline. No matter what arena she works in, 'story-telling' and the inner truth of a story are the key elements influencing her images.

She has been a professor of cinematography at several major German film schools, most recently at the HFF Konrad Wolf Potsdam.

Birgit Gudjonsdottir is a board member in Imago the European Federation of Cinematographers.
