Penka Kouneva
Music Composer

Film and game composer Penka Kouneva enjoys a reputation as a mega-talent and a consummate professional. Working alongside Steve Jablonsky she composed the score for Ubisoft's Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands and Activision's Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen games. Penka has scored 12 independent features (Midnight Movie), 4 television films, indie games and episodic TV shows.

Penka is also a Lead Orchestrator for films and games, including Transformers 1, 2 & 3; Pirates 3; Tim Burton's 9; Sherlock Holmes; Angels and Demons; Gears of War 2 & 3; World of Warcraft; Starcraft II; Diable III; plus the TV shows True Blood (HBO), Revenge (ABC), etc.

Ender's Game
Penka recently made Hollywood history as the first woman (since Shirley Walker) to work as a Lead Orchestrator on two $100M studio features, Elysium and Ender's Game, and is currently Lead-orchestrating Need for Speed for Dreamworks.

As a Lead Orchestrator and Score Producer, Penka has been instrumental in nurturing the careers of many rising talents. She is renowned in Hollywood for mentoring many young composers and creating career-changing opportunities and employment for talented musicians in her field.

Penka was born and raised in Bulgaria and began composing for children's theater at the age of 12. Upon finishing Sofia National Music Academy in 1990 she was awarded a Graduate fellowship in Composition at Duke University and arrived in the U.S. with $150 in her pocket. In 1997, she received the first-ever Doctorate degree in composition from the newly established PhD program at Duke. In 1999 she arrived in Hollywood to build a career as a film composer. She had little money and only one connection - her first mentor, the Emmy-winning TV composer Patrick Williams.

In 2012, Penka released her first album of modern cinematic orchestral music, A Warrior's Odyssey. The winner of three awards (Hollywood Music in Media Award, Square Enix Music Online and Independent Music Awards), this album features 18 tracks recorded with live orchestra, choir and string quartet.

Over the years, Penka's work has received numerous Composition Awards, including: a Sundance Composer Fellowship, two Ovation Awards, ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop, and Grand Prix at the Tokyo Young Composers Competition, among others.

For her extraordinary musical accomplishments, Penka Kouneva has been selected by TheWIFTS Foundation to receive the 2013 Music Award.
