Sarah McCarthy
Best Documentary (People)

Sarah McCarthy
Director

Sarah McCarthy has been selected by TheWIFTS Foundation to receive the 2013 Best Documentary Award (People). For her absorbing and unflinching presentation of the psychology that affects how and why bonds of love are created.

Born in Sydney, McCarthy studied film in her native Australia. After graduating with first class honors, and a graduation film that picked up a collection of short film awards, she moved to London where she worked in development for the BBC and RDF Media before moving into documentary directing. Her directorial debut was entitled 'Murderers on the Dance Floor' and it premiered on Channel 4 in UK. The film tells the story behind an incredible YouTube clip in which 1500 Filipino prisoners dance to Michael Jackson's Thriller. It has been viewed by over 51 million people.
McCarthy followed up her debut with 'Five Weddings, Five Funerals' for BBC1. It tells the story of a 77-year-old Grandmother Betty Neumar who stands accused of killing her five husbands and her own son, each time for life insurance money. The film pieces together Betty's trail of destruction and broken lives by tracking down relatives of her ex husbands, her children and even the killer granny herself.

Sarah McCarthy's next recent film The Sound of Mumbai: A Musical premiered in the Real to Reel section of Toronto International Film Festival in 2010. Sarah was one of four directors featured in Morgan Spurlock's 'Committed', an hour-long documentary about directors' experiences of Toronto, which premiered on AMC in October of last year.

Sarah's most recent documentary 'The Dark Matter of Love' tells the story of three Russian orphans learning to love their adoptive American family, the Diaz's, and each other, through a scientific intervention. Because the reality of bonding with children who have grown up in institutions turns out to be more difficult than the Diaz family had ever imagined, they hire two of the world's best developmental psychologists to help them. By working through the psychological program, the Diaz's are connected with the latest scientific discoveries into how evolution has hard-wired parents and children to interact in ways that optimize a child's development.

Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, The Dark Matter of Love fuses the story of the Diaz family learning to love with extremely rare archive footage of science experiments that have contributed to the knowledge of love's inner workings.
