The Sylvie Nissen Costume Design Award

Sonia Grande
Costume Designer

Sonia Grande is the recipient of the Inaugural Sylvie Nissen Costume Design Award from TheWIFTS Foundation for Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris and her body of work across four continents.

Sonia studied at the Royal School of Drama in Madrid. She began her career as an assistant costume designer working with Italian and Spanish costume designers Andrea D'odorico, Miguel Narros, Emanuele Luzzati and Gerardo Vera, all of whom also directed for national theater companies.

After ten years with the National Ballet of Spain, designing costumes for the productions of Moliere, Shakespeare, Calderón de la Barca, and Cervantes, Grande started working fulltime on Costume Design for feature films in 1990.

Sonia has worked on four continents and collaborated with many iconic directors including Woody Allen, Pedro Almodovar, Alejandro Amenábar, Nancy Meyers, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu, Todd Field, Fernando Trueba and Luis Puenzo, among others.

Grande was the Costume Designer on the feature films Midnight in Paris, Magic in the Moonlight, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, To Rome with Love, Talk to Her, Broken Embraces, The Others, The Sea Inside, Regression, and It's Complicated.

A native of Spain, Sonia Grande has been nominated nine times for the Goya Award for her work on Even the Rain, Broken Embraces, The Blind Sunflowers, Lola, Hormigas en la Boca, The Whore and the Whale, The Others, Butterfly's Tongue, and La Celestina.

Sonia Grande received a Goya Award for her work on The Girl of Your Dreams in 1998.

In 2005, Sonia Grande was nominated for the Silver Condor Award (Argentina) for the film The Whore and the Whale.

Sonia is currently in pre-production on Lost City of Z for director James Gray.

Sylvie Nissen, sponsor of TheWIFTS Foundation Sylvie Nissen Costume Design Award inaugarated in 2014, requested that the first award be presented to the Costume Designer of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, a movie she loved and admired for the period costumes and their attention to detail.

In addition to the Porcelain Award from TheWIFTS, the recipient of The Sylvie Nissen Costume Design Award receives a bracelet from her collection. This year's (2014) bracelet is a Solid Silver Bangle made from Chocolate Stingray (Galuchat) adorned with precious stones: Peridot, Amethyst, Blue Topaz, Pink Tourmaline, and White Topaz.

About the Goya Awards: Every year, the Academy celebrates the quality of Spanish cinema by presenting the Goya Awards, to the best professionals in each of the technical and creative categories.
