Mo Scarpelli - United States
The Documentary Award - Frame by Frame

Mo Scarpelli
Director - Producer - Cinematographer

Mo Scarpelli

Director, Producer, and Cinematographer of non-fiction cinema, Mo Scarpelli is the recipient of TheWIFTS 2016 Documentary Award for Frame By Frame, an uncompromising account by four journalists about life after the Taliban and the importance of preserving the art of photography by documenting, building and maintaining a free press, something that is taken for granted in the free world.

Mo Scarpelli's first feature-length documentary Frame By Frame (2016) was jointly directed and produced in collaboration with Alexandria Bombach. With their collective experience of making non-fiction stories in 20 countries across the globe, Mo and Alexandra teamed up together and raised US$75.000 on Kickstarter for the documentary feature Frame By Frame.

In 2012, Mo Scarpelli founded Rake Films as a story-driven documentary production house. In line with its mandate, Rake's clients, among others include Aeras, a nonprofit biotechnology organization developing new, effective tuberculosis (TB) vaccines that are affordable and accessible to all who need them.

Also on its client list is The END Fund, the world's first private philanthropic initiative to combat the five most common neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that, together, cause up to 90% of the NTD burden in sub-Saharan Africa. Supported by a group of global philanthropists, the END Fund provides financing for nationwide disease control initiatives, creating new programs, supplementing existing ones, and using leveraged funds to extend and deepen the impact.

Other clients with underlying objectives of story-driven documentaries are: Bread for the World School, and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.

Before establishing Rake, Scarpelli spent more than two years directing, shooting, editing and producing media for non-profit organization Charity. Prior to that, she managed and produced multimedia content and reported for The Wall Street Journal. Mo learned and earned her reporting credentials at the University of Missouri's Journalism School, where she spearheaded multimedia storytelling for traditional news outlets such as KOMU-TV 8 (NBC), KBIA radio (NPR) and The Columbia Missourian.

Frame By Frame premiered at SXSW Film Festival (2015) before screening at Hot Docs, AFI DOCS, BFI London Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival, and has showcased in 60+ others around the world.

The film has garnered more than a dozen jury and audience awards as well as a Cinema Eye Honors nomination, and continues to be shown in theaters and festivals.

Mo is a recipient of the Speranza Foundation Female Filmmaker Award, the Lena Sharpe Award for Persistence of Vision (Seattle Intl Film Festival), and the Reel Women Direct Prize (Cleveland Intl Film Festival).

Together with receiving The Documentary Award for Frame by Frame, TheWIFTS Foundation International Awards recognizes Mo Scarpelli for her unwavering commitment to documenting subject matter that constitutes essential aspects of the fabric of our society.
