The Animation Award Inaugurated 2013
The Feature Film Animation genre has long been the domain of major companies such as Disney and Pixar. The consumer's appetite for this entertainment form is now a standard in Theatrical release patterns, the small screen and Platforms worldwide. With the genre's accelerated growth and the worldwide ability to produce animation cost efficiently, Animation increasingly comes not only from the majors but also the independent sector.
Women like Lotte Reiniger, a respected animator of the Silent Era, have played an important role in animation filmmaking for the big and small screen since the inception of the genre, but only seldom have they been singled out for recognition. To celebrate this group of women and their contributions, TheWIFTS Foundation has inaugurated TheWIFTS Foundation International Visionary Award for Best Animation.
Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981) towers in the history of animation as the first woman animator. Her technique used cut-paper silhouettes, based on a folk art form called scherenschnitte. Lotte created a system of hinge pins to move character joints. She also invented the idea of working with different sized silhouette "puppets" to create levels of detail for wide shots and close-ups. Her films are notable for the use of atmospheric perspective, which she achieved by using increasingly pale grays to express background depth. Between 1919-1979 Lotte Reiniger directed 42 titles, including The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), one of the first animated feature films in cinema history.

Best Short
For excellent directing, superb acting, creative cinematography.

Music Award
Together with the Script, the invisible atmosphere created by the film's Score subtly sways the story's mood and augments its timbre as the two elements work in tandem to establish the film's rhythm. In that scoring is one of the most difficult arenas in the filmmaking discipline for women to break into and in recognition of the small group of women who score films and produce segments for film scores, 2012 marks the inauguration of TheWIFTS Foundation Music Award.

The Sound Award Inaugurated 2013
The Sound element in a movie is a combination of the orchestral music and myriad other sounds that accentuate every nuance of the film. Every sound is separate and all require meticulous assemblage so that the movie can present a cohesive emotional whole. Because it is so subtle, the intricacies of creating sound is an element of filmmaking that is often taken for granted and women are rarely recognized as being at the forefront of this field. To celebrate the women in Sound, TheWIFTS Foundation has inaugurated TheWIFTS Foundation International Visionary Award for Sound.
