THE WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL FILM & TELEVISION SHOWCASE (TheWIFTS FOUNDATION)TO HONOR FILMMAKER JUDY IROLA WITH THE CINEMATOGRAPHER AWARD

Los Angeles, CA – Filmmaker Judy Irola will receive the Cinematographer Award at the second annual awards event for The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase (TheWIFTS Foundation) event at the Andaz Hotel on Friday, December 4, 2009.

The Women's International Film & Television Showcase, TheWIFTS Foundation International Visionary Awards – in its second year is screening 14 films and 16 shorts from 11 countries. TheWIFTS screens films and documentaries celebrating the talent and accomplishments of women in the film and television industry worldwide that brings together women from all walks of life through the Art of Film & Television, the 21st Century Visual Communicator.

Born into a family of Basque sheepherders in Fresno, California, in 1943, Irola spent her college years serving in the Peace Corps in Niger, Africa. Upon returning to the United States in 1968, she joined the documentary film unit at KQED, the public television station in San Francisco.

In 1972, she was invited into an all-male film collective in San Francisco, Cine Manifest. Irola has photographed 16 independent feature films, a television series for NBC, numerous movies of the week for many of the networks, and over 40 documentaries.

Her numerous documentary credits include: The Glamorous Days of The Adlon Hotel, (First Prize Bavarian Film Festival) directed by Percy Adlon; The Man Who Tried To Buy Hollywood: Giancarlo Parretti, (First Prize Venice Film Festival) directed by Jean-Pierre Moscardo; and Saturday Night Live, eight films for Schiller’s Reel , including La Dolce Gilda.

Irola was the third woman to become a member of the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). She has been the recipient of Kodak’s Vision Award. Presently she is a tenured professor in the School of Cinematic Arts at USC and holds the Conrad Hall Chair in Cinematography (endowed by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg). She is also the head of the cinematography program where she designs the curriculum and supervises 26 cinematographers on the faculty.

Judy Irola will be awarded the Cinematographer Award at The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase second annual event on Friday, December 4, 2009.
