THE WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL FILM & TELEVISION SHOWCASE (TheWIFTS FOUNDATION) TO HONOR EMMY AWARD WINNING ACTRESS SHOHREH AGHDASHLOO WITH HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Los Angeles, CA – Emmy Award Winner Shohreh Aghdashloo will receive the Humanitarian Award at the second annual awards event for The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase (TheWIFTS Foundation) Event at the Andaz Hotel on Friday, December 4, 2009.

The Women's International Film & Television Showcase, TheWIFTS Foundation International Visionary Awards – in its second year is screening 14 films and 16 shorts from 11 countries. TheWIFTS screens films and documentaries celebrating the talent and accomplishments of women in the film and television industry worldwide that brings together women from all walks of life through the Art of Film & Television, the 21st Century Visual Communicator.

Shohreh Aghdashloo has been an activist for women's rights in Iran for more than three decades. She moved to London in the late 70s and began her acting career.

Aghdashloo's performance in America So Beautiful and Maryam brought in kudos from the Independent Spirit Awards, the New York Film Critics and the Los Angeles Film Critics Associations, all of which named her 2003's Best Supporting Actress. The Academy followed suit, nominating Shohreh Aghdashloo as an Oscar contender. She was recently awarded a 2009 Emmy Award, for her supporting role on the HBO original miniseries, House of Saddam.

Her continued devotion to effect change brought her to the attention of director Cyrus Nowrasteh who offered her the crucial role of "Zahra", the voice of justice, in his film THE STONING OF SORAYA M. Released this past summer, THE STONING OF SORAYA M, is a powerful indictment of the practice of stoning which continues in the Islamic Republic of Iran and other countries around the world.

Her commitment to the film and its cause brought her to the attention of such organizations as Vital Voices and Moral Courage, when she spoke out in Washington about the plight of women in Iran. These outspoken allegations against her own country put her in severe jeopardy for her life and career. Her most recent act of defiance was when she appeared on national television in support of the women demonstrating in the streets of Iran during the recent election. It is for her courage and determination to use her brilliant art to effect change that TheWIFTS Foundation Humanitarian Award 2009 is awarded to Shohreh Aghdashloo.

Shohreh Aghdashloo will be awarded a Humanitarian Award at The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase second annual on Friday, December 4, 2009.

To embrace its ethos, TheWIFTS Foundation International Visionary Awards honors ‘women as individuals’.
