THE WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL FILM & TELEVISION SHOWCASE (TheWIFTS FOUNDATION) TO HONOR WORLD MARATHON CHAMPION TEGLA LOROUPE WITH THE DOVE AWARD

Kenya Runner Who Seeks Peace for Her Corner of the World to Receive Dove Award from TheWIFTS Foundation in December

Los Angeles, CA – Tegla Loroupe will receive the Dove Award at the second annual awards event for The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase (TheWIFTS Foundation) Event at the Andaz Hotel on Friday, December 4, 2009.

The Women's International Film & Television Showcase, TheWIFTS Foundation International Visionary Awards – in its second year is screening 14 films and 16 shorts from 11 countries. TheWIFTS screens films and documentaries celebrating the talent and accomplishments of women in the film and television industry worldwide that brings together women from all walks of life through the Art of Film & Television, the 21st Century Visual Communicator.

Loroupe’s sunny attitude and sheer grit, along with some God-given speed, propelled her to become one of the most talented runners in the world, the winner of back-to-back New York City Marathons in the mid-1990s, a world-record breaker and a hero in her native Kenya. In 1994, she ran her first marathon, the New York City Marathon. She won, being the first black African woman to do so. In 1995, she again won the Marathon. In 1998, she set a women’s world record in the marathon in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In 1999, she shaved four seconds off that record in Berlin. It has since been broken.

She was on top of the world, favored to win gold at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, but the night before the race, she was struck violently ill by food poisoning.

Loroupe’s primary focus is to bring peace to her native area, an expanse in northwest Kenya that is hilly and dry, perfect for marathon training and known for conflict among the local tribes. To this end, as well as continuing to compete, the diminutive star established three years ago the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation and Academy, which runs a number of conflict resolution programs and is a place where warriors can trade in their guns and spears for athletic training. As a strong advocate of equality for the sexes in a culture that discourages education for females, she wants to help the girls of her tribe, the Pokot.

Tegla Loroupe will be awarded the Dove Award at The Women’s International Film & Television Showcase second annula event on Friday, December 4, 2009.

To embrace its ethos, TheWIFTS Foundation International Visionary Awards honors ‘women as individuals’. This year’s Honorees include: Elizabeth Grant – Lifetime Achievement Award; Nancy Kwan – Lifetime Tribute Award; Tegla Loroupe –Dove Award; Shohreh Aghdashloo - Humanitarian Award; Betty Makoni -Humanitarian Award; Mary McGuckian – Career Achievement Award; Nancy Carter – The Elizabeth Grant Entrepreneur Award; Christina Jennings – Television Pioneer Award; Ruth Carter – Costume Design Award; Irshad Manji – Visionary Award; Georgia Jeffries – Screenwriter Award; Judy Irola – Cinematographer Award; and Magda Rod – Gaea Environment Award. http://www.thewifts.org/2009_Honorees.php
